[ The image presented on the screen shows a Kirk that looks like he probably just got up. He doesn't have enough hair for it to look to messy, but somehow it manages it, and his eyes look bleary. He runs a hand over his face and sighs. ]

Okay, how badly do you need therapy when even you have to admit that you need therapy?

[So maybe it's stating the obvious, but he'd seemed alright the last time she'd seen him.

...Then again, considering all that had happened that week, she wouldn't be surprised if this was more fallout.]

You could say that, yeah. Not quite a nuclear bomb, but... let's just say it's rocked my world and I'm still shaking.

_{[ He shrugged, rubbing his face, still looking like he just got out of bed.

Normally, he'd know what to do, go with is gut, and punch it straight into space. But this was different. This sort of thing? Yeah, this was not his speciality and he was fumbling about like a nervous teen. ]}

Is it safe to assume that this is fallout from Valentines?

[Her expression is understanding as she watches him. He looks tired. That she can sympathize with.]

I think it knocked a large portion of people here for a loop.

Yeah, I mean, it came up pretty good during Valentine's. Didn't actually start dealing with it till a week after.

I mean... if it was anything else, I think I could deal with it. This.. I'm not sure how.

[There's a hint of wistful regret in her voice when she answers him.] I wish I had helpful advice for you. Some answer that would make it easier to understand or cope with. I'm afraid I don't.

I'm beginning to see that no one does and I'll have to do it myself. And for the first time in my life I really wish someone had an answer and I wish I wasn't so adverse to authority.

Have you tried... talking it out with this person? [That hadn't worked at all well for her, but it did for some.]

Yeah. We even meditated on it, and just... I know what he wants and I can't give it to him.

_{[ He'd never been able to give it to anyone. It was why he cut and run any time a girl said 'I love you'. ]}

Ahh. I can see how that would be... complicated then. I'm sorry.

_{[He let out a deep and long suffering sigh and looked back up at her and gave her one of his dashing little smiles.]}

For what it's worth, I enjoy seeing your face again, at least.

_{[ What? It was his default, the flirting. It took his mind off things. ]}

Well, that makes someone. [There's a wry laugh in her voice at his abrupt change of subject and she gives him a bemused look.] It's worth enough, actually. I wish I could help uncomplicated things for you, but I'm afraid I'm not very good at this sort of thing.

You and me both. Star Fleet doesn't have lessons in how to deal with feelings. Maybe the medics do, though I think Bones might have skipped most of those.

My superiors just tried to train them out of me. [The admission is a little wry, and she actually surprises herself when the words slip out before she entirely intends them to. It's not like her to share personal experiences, not with anyone. But then she shrugs dismissively and changes the subject, just in case.]

I'm not sure an entire decade of lessons would do any good when you come to it for real. I'm not sure it's ever the same twice.

_{[ He notes that, but is polite and decides not to make any more mention of it. For the moment. ]}

Yeah, well, I'd give anything for having gotten some instruction. My uncle wasn't very good with teaching me how to deal with this stuff either, but then he was never very happy with me after I crashed his car.

Held a grudge, did he?

Well, it was antique and I kind of did crash it into a canyon....

Yeah, a canyon. I felt kind of proud of it actually - all secret spy. Running from the cops, canyon coming up, set the car on auto, bailed out the door in a roll and over the side it went.

I was only twelve too. It is the shining star on my record to this day.

...I can see why your uncle might hold a grudge.

He asked you to drive his car into a canyon?

I'm sure your 12-year-old self had very good reasons.

I like to think that, and then another part of me thinks I was just really, really bored. And you know what twelve year old boys are like.

Actually, I haven't known all that many twelve year old boys. Although what I have seen hasn't convinced me they change all that much with age.
