I'd Do Anything For Love, But I Won't Do That
[ The past week had been very trying with Spock back, for a number of reasons. Not that he hated having Spock back, of course, but it was an adjustment, and was turning into a personal learning experience.
For one, he was fast figuring out that he was not meant to be a nursemaid of any kind. He didn't have the patience for it, or the beside manner - especially against a Vulcan. Of course he did it though, because Spock needed him too and he wasn't the sort to leave a friend hanging out to dry. But, yeah, sometimes it just made him realize how glad he was his career had turned out the way it had and that he kept far, far away from med bay.
Besides nurse maiding, he was having constant headaches. He figured it was from the link he shared with Spock. In his absence, he had loosened his shields - at first in a attempt to continue to feel for the link, faint with Spock being away from their little bird cage. And now that he was back, he was forgetting to keep himself closed to it. It made for pounding temples, and a part of him knew he would need to start meditating again to gain control.
For the moment though, he had a bit of time free, Spock wanting to meditate, and that being something Spock could do on his own without aid from Kirk. He was fairly sure Nymeria and Arya should be home soonish, but even then he didn't plan to be gone long. Just run some errands, get some air, and come on back.

That being the case, Kirk could be found at the general grocery store, picking up quite a few vegetables to acommodate Spock's return and his dietary choices, sitting by the fountain to enjoy some coffee in the hopes it would ease some of his headache, and a bit later, after checking on Spock, he can be seen working out in the battle dome using the forms he had been taught from his numerous teachers, which had actually started producing an interesting, if somewhat crude, mix style (which was currently being thrown at a sand-filled dummy rather than his usual holo partner). ]

Well, it's because of the speeds it's going at. It's traveling so fast that it can punch through your body without to much trouble, and they're big enough that they can shred muscle, bone, and major organs. One bullet through the brain or heart and you're gone.

[ Similar to the way senbon works -- a tiny weapon with a very lethal punch if the user knows exactly where to send it. ]
I see.
[ He nods then, and pulls out a kunai from his utility pouch. ]
Where I'm from, we use these kind of weapons more. [ He holds the kunai out to Kirk for inspection, if he wants to take it. ]

With the small guns, yeah. Once you get into tank size, pin-point takes on a different meaning.
[ He reached out, taking the tiny blade and examining it. ]
I guess it's good for mid-range and up close fighting, but you have to work harder to do the damage. Guns work better mid to long range, but point-blank can be devastating depending on where you actually hit.
[ He handed it back to Kakashi with a little grin. ]
You offering to teach me how to use it?
woops fails at life again
[ Though Kakashi's considering a potential trade -- maybe Kirk might be willing to teach him how to use guns if he shows him how to use kunai. ]
Re: woops fails at life again
Honestly? No. I know which way to point a knife, but it's not exactly something they make a point of teaching you in Star Fleet.
And what's a "kata"?
no subject
[ Kakashi goes through a slow series of hand movements, gracefully cutting through the air with his palms. ]
This series of kata can be very effective on its own. But with a kunai...
[ He pulls out a kunai and demonstrates -- this time, the blade cuts through the air so swiftly there's a shhh of sound as it passes. It would be very easy to see how it is as lethal as it is graceful. ]
The attack changes from crushing injuries to potentially lethal ones.

[ Kirk whistles after the kunai demonstration. He had handled knives before, but nothing like that. Again, his education was mostly bar fights and how to avoid them whenever they got dragged out. Knives meant bad business, as did guns. But Kakashi was way above anything he was capable of, and after a second he also laughed. ]
Heh, kind of reminds me of one of my officers - Sulu. He's trained to work with a katana. Traditionalist, I guess.
[ And it was a cool katana, retractable even. ]
Can you use multiple kunai at once?
[ They were small and had those rings at the top, after all. ]

[ Kakashi pulls out a few more kunai then, three for each hand, holding them between his fingers so that the rings are cushioned in his palms and the blades protrude from his knuckles. And then he steps to his side, just far enough so Kirk isn't directly in front of him, and brings up both hands so they cross his chest, and with a quick, expert flick of the wrists and a lunge of the foot forward, all six kunai go flying towards the practice dummy.
There are six instantaneous thuds as the kunai embed themselves into the dummy.
If the dummy had been a human being, it would've had its heart, lungs, liver, stomach, and throat impaled. ]

[ Kirk considered that, nodding, going up to take one of the kunai. He tugged it out of the dummy, twirling it about his finger a moment before pressing the tip against his finger and drawing a single drop of blood. ]
Not bad - pretty cool.
But, what happens if you're up against more than one? I always thought throwing your weapon away was number one on the rules of things you don't do when in a fight.

[ Kakashi pats the harness he's wearing on his thigh to emphasize his words. It may be too complicated to explain that he also has plenty of other weapons locked up in scrolls he also carries, at least for this particular conversation. ]
Besides, to be a ninja is to become a weapon yourself. Things like kunai and shuriken are just tools. There are many other techniques that can be used in combat.
no subject
Heh, sounds about right. Sounds pretty cool.
[ He tossed the kunai he had been holding back to Kakashi, rolling his neck and cracking it loudly. ]
As a kid I used to pretend I was a ninja on the playground sometimes. Everything I probably did was entirely wrong and culturally insulting, but I was five so hopefully I get a pass?
no subject
Maa, kids where I'm from play ninja all the time, too. Even the ones who don't intend to enroll in the Academy. I'm sure you meant no harm.
[ He's not going to explain that the village is technically a ninja village, and there's a far higher ratio of ninja to civilians. ]
Anyway, if you're interested in learning, I wouldn't mind showing you a few kata if you might be open to teaching me more about guns. I'd like to learn more about the weapons from other worlds.
[ It may also prove to be useful. ]

[ He should have seen that coming, but it wasn't really a shock either. He had been getting lessons from others, and with no currency, well, battering and trading was all you could do. He didn't think Kakashi was a bad guy, and he had a pretty good sense of these things - or so he liked to think anyways. Besides, it wasn't hard to learn to shoot really, if he really wanted to learn.
So he nodded and stuck out his hand. ]
Sure, you got it. I can work some of the older models still. Uncle had some on the farm.

He gives Kirk a firm shake, then releases the other man's hand as to not end up... holding it, or anything awkward like that. ]
When would you like to start?
no subject
[ He saw the hesitation and wondered if he should have bowed, but it was a moot point once the handshake was over.
He was surprised at the question though, but hey, why not get going while the going was good, right? ]
Do I get the beginner's version to start off with?
