[ Oh. Yes. This sounded just up his alley. He still wasn't all that
comfortable with magic or the theories behind it, but if he started
thinking on it like a science project and waves and signals... yes, it
could be fun. ]
That definitely sounds like something I could be interested in. I have
experience with long-range sending and interference signals in my own
world, so hopefully I can provide some insights.
[ if he's not entirely certain what interest has to do with agreement, he'll still take it. ]
Excellent. [ hollowly. they could use more mages, whatever this one's origins. ] Myself or Myrobalan Shivana will act as points of contact; your name will be forwarded to Messere Thranduil, and to those others assisting. Are you open to travel outside the city?
Yes; he heads it. [ the words are steady, without judgment (as though they might be anything else) ] There were announcements. You are open to travel if it is not extended, or you are not open to travel?
[ the scratch of a pen might explain the request for clarity. ]
Yes, and I was away for a month so not all announcements might have made it
to me.
[ Just in case you were judging, because you have that kind of
reserved tone he feels suggests you are. Or maybe he's just used to being
judged. Either way, he... should probably say hello. At least it's not
Valentine anymore, thank god, though he's not sure how he feels about
Thranduil either. ]
Yes, I am open to travel so long as it is not extended - by which I mean
more than a week.
I see. The focus of this project is to improve the crystals' communication functions. Do you believe it was device error, or personal inattention that prevented your receipt of messages?
[ he doesn't care if someone's listening to their crystal, but if the crystals themselves are malfunctioning, that's an immediate, professional concern. ]
More than likely I wasn't listening. I tended to only use them when I
needed to speak with someone specifically. The rest of the time I was
otherwise occupied. I haven't detected any malfunctions in my crystal to
date since I got back, but it would be worth it to do long range quality
tests anyways.
I'm told they functioned well in Rivain, but that's hardly formal analysis. Given your current domestic focus, secondhand research may be a less demanding use of your time. Would you be willing to survey others who have taken previous journeys, to document any potential errors? It's an area to which I'm not personally suited.
Sure, I would be willing, though I hope to be of a little more use than
that. Did you have a specific list in mind you want to send me to work
through?
The Imperial Highway wasn't built in a day; there are many steps ahead of us. Likely you'll have a better idea than I of how to structure the inquiry, I've not been long in Kirkwall. If you'd prefer not to speak to others directly, perhaps the crystals themselves would serve.
It might work better for some people than others. Or if you don't mind I
might need to have someone help with some of the inquiries. There's been
tension lately between natives and Rifters. I wouldn't want that feeling to
get in the way of good data.
I expect there will be less of it — [ the tension ] — Within the Inquisition. You needn't ask anyone outside it; should you encounter an unaffiliated person with possession of a crystal, please inform me that we might secure our communications.

Wait until he explains there is no magic in his world. Unless you consider science magic... ]
Thranduil? I hadn't realized he was part of the research group.
And no, I'm not, though I would prefer it not be extended if at all possible. I was just away for a month.

Beyond this, your methods are your own.
