[ So, Luceti, you have Kirk showing up today on our totally hi-grade, super deluxe communication system (haha, yeah right). Anyways, he's there, and he currently has a copy of George Orwell's "1984" displayed in hand. ]
So... I have an honest to god sort of question for everyone.
How many of you ever thought or believed the stuff in books like this would come true in the future? Or better yet, does anyone actually live in a world like these books describe?
Because, really, the twenty-first century view of the future is... interesting.

Nah, I think you're still reading too much into it... taking the idea too literally, y'know? Like, the story's just an example; the author was using the distant future to put what's going on today in perspective. He's trying to remind us to think about stuff in the present, not trying to predict the future.
Re: [Voice]
Hmm, I see your point. I still think a part of this guy thought this would be the future though, but this is also so far in my world's past it's hard to really grasp what he was thinking and going through at time. What any of these guys were, actually.
[Voice]
What year are you from, anyway?
Re: [Voice]
Me? I'm from 2258.
[ Totally straight face, too. Doesn't laugh, crack a smile. He's dead serious. But then, he's Captain Kirk. ]
[Voice]
...seriously?
Re: [Voice]
Yup!
[ He is grinning so brightly right now. ]
I'm captain of a space ship too, the Enterprise.
[Voice]
Can it go like, really far out? We're still working on making it to Mars.
Re: [Voice]
Oh yeah. It's equipped with the newest engines for light speed travel. We can make it to Vulcan...
[ And there he paused, awkward and suddenly sad. ]
Well, we can go a long ways in a matter of hours. It's made meeting other races and trade a lot easier - and more dangerous in the case of the Klingons.
[Voice]
Wow, that's so awesome! Like I can't even imagine... but man, I wish I could ride in a spaceship like that. We've got a super high tech jet, but it's just not the same, you know? It can go fast, but not light speed fast!
Re: [Voice]
Heh, well, if we ever get out of here, maybe you will.
[ He'd been making that promise alot, but technically they were all refugees here, and if the Enterprise was the only ship big enough to house everyone... well, he could deal with red tape later. As in he patched it up, didn't try and work his way through it. ]
It really is something else, watching the stars go by as streaks of light... It's amazing.
[Voice]
Okay, that's it. New dream: going into outer space!
Re: [Voice]
Just stay out of Klingon space and you'll be fine. It can get kind of boring though, when you have to do long jumps.
[Voice]
Long jumps?
Re: [Voice]
Light years are a measure of distance, not time. Light has a max speed, it only goes so fast. The further away you travel, the more time it takes and even multiple jumps depending on the strain of your engines. Sometimes you have to come out and let them - well, reboot is the easiest term, like a rest stop on a long road trip. You can't risk the nuclear core going boom on you. Sort of ruins the whole traveling in space thing.
