[ So, Luceti, you have Kirk showing up today on our totally hi-grade, super deluxe communication system (haha, yeah right). Anyways, he's there, and he currently has a copy of George Orwell's "1984" displayed in hand. ]
So... I have an honest to god sort of question for everyone.
How many of you ever thought or believed the stuff in books like this would come true in the future? Or better yet, does anyone actually live in a world like these books describe?
Because, really, the twenty-first century view of the future is... interesting.

Re: [Video]
[Huh, a proper discussion between these two, this is impressive.]
Re: [Video]
Well, the book existed in our universe at one point, and while I think some of the ideas may have made it through the years, in a small, fractal sort of way...
Re: [Video]
No stereotype of ships flying in space has been applied to starfleet and the federation, with the exception that they are in face in space.
Re: [Video]
Yeah, that's true. Most of the descriptions I've come across all have them very stream-lined, like an airplane or the old shuttles they used to send to Mars and the moon.
Re: [Video]
[Spock seems to fall quiet, as if thinking. Perhaps he is enjoying this bookclub session.]
It would be quite interesting to catalog the expressions of those people if they were given the chance to see the Enterprise.
Re: [Video]
Haha, yeah. I think we would need to add a column for 'fainting' though. Does not count as an expression or a reaction?
Re: [Video]
[But there was a bit of a smirk on Spock's lips, enjoying the joke they shared.]
I must admit though, that I was intrigued by Orwell's use of the slogan 2+2=5...
Re: [Video]
I was more focused "Big Brother is watching" because that is possibly one of the creepiest phrases ever.
Re: [Video]
Though I always found it curious that the term 'brother' was used. A family member implies a caretaker, someone that will look out for you... not invade your privacy like this 'big brother' seems apt to do.
Re: [Video]
Well, wasn't this written in an era where Communism and Red Scare and such was going on and people were fighting for social equality? Communism used the terms "Comrade" and "brother" and "sister" I think to help denote that everyone was of the same rank and should help each other, like family. So "Big Brother" was just looking out for you, like family should, keeping the peace, but to a major and very nightmare fueling extreme.
Re: [Video]
Though I find myself curious... why did you start reading this book?
Re: [Video]
I was bored, I guess. I thought I'd give it a shot, and as I got into it, I wanted to know if this "Big Brother" prevailed or if it got toppled. It just got me curious, because some people used to actually think this could be a thing.
Re: [Video]
[There was surveillance everywhere... especially in their universe.]
Re: [Video]
Well, to a point, sure. But not like this, where every little bit of you is regulated.
Come on Spock, do you really think I'd sit quietly with someone watching over my shoulder like this all the time?
Re: [Video]
Kirk just fully described what Spock does to him on a regular basis.]
Re: [Video]
[ Well, Spock is special. He's not some big government thing. And Kirk does what he wants, he isn't regulated. Spock can try and convince him, but Kirk will do what Kirk will do. ]
Hey hey hey, none of the eyebrow thing. Which you still need to teach me how to do, cause it's cool damn it...
Re: [Video]
[Yup, he's an ass.]
Re: [Video]
[ He opens his mouth to start a retort and then clicks it shut, narrowing his eyes at Spock. ]
Smart ass elf. See if I pick up fresh lettuce for you on the way home.
