You've reached Kirk Industries, Inc.
Just leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
If this is personal, well, do the same - except you've called James Kirk.
Re: 173 - Video
Yeah, and I think I could do without the whiplash, last thing I need is a malfunctioning neck.
Not a clue [ Charles is of a mind to humor James, going so far as chuckling to himself] not that I've tried mind you, but I've got a suspicious feeling it wouldn't look at all good.
Re: 173 - Video
[ The thrusting power was never compatible with the amount needed to wait solar absorbers could produce, and all the ships needed nuclear reactors. So yeah, consumer consumption had not become a thing. ]
Oh, I don't know. It's hard to look bad in fishnet.
[ He glanced over at the schematics again and back at Charles. ]
There are a couple things I could use though, just to make sure it's comfortable and fit to you. I'd like to come over and take some measurements off you. We don't want this being to wide, to narrow, to tall - you get my drift.
Re: 173 - Video
[Not that Charles couldn't fule a jet if he needed too, but really, a wheelchair didn't need such complications.]
Well...for strippers...and very secure people I suppose. Not for hermits with facial hair.
[And, as suggested he's not that secure.]
I understand...whenever's convenient for you, my availability is fairly open.
Re: 173 - Video
I could head over now, if you want. I have some other appointments later in the day, but nothing until then. Might as well knock it out so I can get my parts lists going.
Where's your cave?
[ Haha, see, playing off your hermit thing? Well, he thought it was funny anyways. ]
Re: 173 - Video
[Right, Charles is trying to cover a smile at that because...he totally gets the joke.]
District three, house one. I have a few roommates, but they're not in at the moment.
Re: 173 - Video
[ He's moving, going to get his shoes and pack up his tablet so he could make notes and such. ]
Re: 173 - Video
[Well, he'll tidy himself up a bit, but apart from cursory grooming Charles has no intention of getting out of his pajamas...which include jeans, a tank top, and a robe...technically he's dressed.]
Action;
For his part, Kirk was in a nice pair of dark blue jeans, dark black working boots poking out from beneath the hems, scuffed a tad from walking, but not unseemly, and glad in a black, v-necked tshirt that hugged his fit frame beneath a comfortable jacket.
Charles would hear a rapping on his door about fifteen minutes after Kirk had signed off, the man himself on the other side with his bag over one shoulder and a hand stuffed in his pocket. ]
Re: Action;
He'll open the door to James at any rate, though his greeting it a little bit delayed as he can't help looking at the man a bit shocked...because damned if he doesn't look like someone else he knows.
Someone else he made a terrible mistake with and getting over it hasn't been as easy as he liked to pretend. He does shake it off however nodding James through the door.]
I don't have much to offer you Captain, but feel free to make yourself at home.
Re: Action;
Thanks. Nice place you got here.
Re: Action;
[It's all contemporary and very blank slate-like and in the 70s...it's like a canvas waiting for the brush. The tie-dyed brush, loud and obnoxious...but the spaces were all filled in.
As for Charles greeting James in a robe, well this was how he greeted a lot of people so there was nothing to disturb, no cause for discomfort. As promised, aside from the two of them, the house was silent.]
So...where do you want me? I mean...obviously you need the space to work...
Re: Action;
I need some body measurements off you, so wherever you're going to be comfortable is where I'll work. It's fine. I'm not going to be doing any building, this is just extra info to make sure I make it right.
Re: Action;
[Charles might have actually expected it for reasons he doesn't quite get himself, but since James says nothing Charles will go ahead and move some furniture aside in the living room. He figures a more accurate measurement might be better taken without the robe so he discards it after he's done. Tank top and jeans are still present, however, and neither should interfere with the measurements.]
This is as comfortable as it gets I suppose.
Re: Action;
He looks over Charles when the robe comes off, again saying nothing. Out comes a tape measure too, because this was what this was all about, after all. ]
All right, so, I'm going to want to get your full height and your height when sitting, and some variations on that, arm and leg lengths. When I say we're doing something custom, I mean it.
[ He gave him a reassuring smile. ]
Re: Action;
[Not that it's any less awkward because, yeah, he's just standing there while he's measured and if he glances upward or away at something else it's probably to hide the tinge of red creeping into his face.]
Well, for now you have a marionette...just pull my strings as you like and watch me go.
Re: Action;
[ He smirks at him, but he's doing his best to be professional as he took the notes, marking down the sixteenth of an inch. Thankfully these new tape measures had digital read outs on top of the normal ticks, so it went quicker. ]
Measure twice, but once as they say.
[ ooc: quick question: So, if Charles is standing is he doing so with help or is he not paralyzed? ]
Re: Action;
[Damn...that did come out pretty bad didn't it? Though James's professionalism does ease his nerves a bit bit and he starts to relax as he starts taking measurements.]
Is that what they say? Or is it an excuse?
[ooc: The surgery involving the ports corrected his spine, so his legs work, but Charles has this paranoia concerning the malfunctioning of the ports and losing his legs without having any kind of backup. The wheelchair is a safety net.]
Re: Action;
[ He throws him a wink, a light flirtation, but little more. He wasn't in the habit of making his clients uncomfortable, but a little fun was all right, wasn't it? He squatted down and took a measurement from Charles' hip down to his knee and then further down to the floor. ]
Hmm, well, right now it might just be an excuse.
[ His voice is laced with a soft laugh as he makes a note of the two measurements, straightening. ]
All right, can you take a seat for me? Preferably in a chair I can move around.
And... if you don't mind me asking, why do you want this made anyways?
Re: Action;
Right, so he should make it a point to focus on being comfortable when he is slightly the opposite. It's not so much the flirting...okay, well it is entirely the flirting that takes him completely off guard. He used to be pretty good at this, but only when he was making the thinly veiled innuendos.
At what point did he lose his groove? Ah...that did not bear thinking about.]
I can't tell you how flattering that is.
[Or how relieved he is to be relocating to a chair that is easily moved, he does find one on wheels which should certainly prove easy, and does his best to sit...professionally? Anyway it's distracting for...two seconds.]
I am a paraplegic, the port surgery corrected the damage to my spine, but I am not a man who takes chances. If for any reason these ports fail or malfunction, I will be completely helpless. I used to take a drug that treated my spine, but if I went more than a few days without then my legs would fail me...so I always had a chair available.
Re: Action;
[ He follows him and takes measurements of width across thighs and hips in the sitting position, and he is nothing but professional about it, noting the numbers and writing them down without comment.
He's sitting when Charles tells him, running a quick calculation, his head cocking slightly to look up at him and his canary yellow wings brushing up and down, a sign of curiosity, only to fold back against his shoulders when he explained. ]
Wow, that's... some heavy stuff.
Action; forgive the delay, it's the first week of school XD
[For his part, Charles is able to relax into a more professional demeanor. It helps that he's talking, but even more so it helps that he's talking about why he needs the wheel chair. Talking about that particular detail also set Charles to a more serious frame of mind.]
It gets heavier, but I've no wish to depress the man constructing my wheelchair [Charles managed a half smile] it just wouldn't do.
It's all good :)
Well, believe it or not, I've been told I'm a good listener.
[ He shrugged his shoulders, glancing up slightly to offer him a reassuring smile, tapping away at his pad as he made notes about materials and sizes. He didn't mind listening to other's problems. He was actually half good at solving them. It was his own that were the real issue. ]
So, what do you do here? Everyone seems to have their little slice of it worked out. You know what mine is.
[ He motioned down to his pad, thinking Charles could do with a change of subject. If he wanted to talk about it, he could, but Kirk wasn't in the habit of forcing issues. If they came up, they did, and he only really tried to pry them out of people if they posed a true problem. Besides, he had really just met Charles. It might be a bit rude to poke to hard. ]
no subject
[Which is true, but Charles doesn't bother to elaborate on the story unless the conversation manages to weave its way back in that direction.
So once the conversation turned to something else he went with it.]
Well I worked for the CIA and I was a professor at a school for the gifted where I come from...with a Ph.D. in psychology, biophysics, and genetics...I have received a few offers. There's nothing I can do as an alcoholic, however, which is something I intend to fix...so you will tell you what I owe you for all of this, yeah?
[Not that Charles doesn't have enough for a down payment.]

That's quite the list of accomplishments there. I'm lucky I made it through school and into the Academy.
[ Not because he's stupid. He's clearly not, he just has issues with authority figures and he's a doer, not a thinker. He wanted to be out exploring, not talking about the rank and file or procedure.
He gives him a glance when he says he's an alcoholic, cocking his head a little. It was a surprising admission, but not one he held against him.
His lips twitched into another of those smiles, the ones full of mischief. ]
How about 10% down payment, and you play my cookie taste tester? I'll bring the milk.
[ He did need a taste tester, and frankly he also thought that Charles could use a day out from the looks of it. He seemed like a nice guy, and he wasn't terrible looking besides. Maybe needed a comb through his hair. ]

[Charles does have a gift for reading people that doesn't entirely require him to have telepathy. Fortunately when it came to his own education Charles was able to take charge of it, control it, he wasn't at all interested in sitting and listening to a talking head.
As for his confession, well the mutant's lucidness often took people by surprise.
What takes him by surprise is is the whole cookie taste tester offer. He's talking about actual cookies, right? Because now it's his turn to raise an eyebrow.]
I suppose...been a lab rat before, and nothing you do to me could be nearly as bad as what I've done to myself.
[Though when he does finally dry out, Charles will have to remember to get back into running, because...cookies.]
