Literary Inquiry [ Video ]

[ So, Luceti, you have Kirk showing up today on our totally hi-grade, super deluxe communication system (haha, yeah right). Anyways, he's there, and he currently has a copy of George Orwell's "1984" displayed in hand. ]

So... I have an honest to god sort of question for everyone.

How many of you ever thought or believed the stuff in books like this would come true in the future? Or better yet, does anyone actually live in a world like these books describe?

Because, really, the twenty-first century view of the future is... interesting.

[Oh. Yes. That. A very faint blush may or may not be creeping into his cheeks now, though it's hardly noticeable. Hardly.]

Er... y-yes, it has been some time, C-Captain Kirk... [Awkward smile.] By 'sh-shacked up', you mean...? [Yes, the slang is going over his head.]

How does the book portray the "twenty-first century"? ( She rarely has time to read for pleasure, so this is asked out of pure curiosity. )

To some degree, does it not?

[There was surveillance everywhere... especially in their universe.]

I can't say I believe what's written in books at home about its future, but I do believe the people that happen to be from the future.

[Off-camera, Don buries his face in his hands.]

Let it go, Rob.

Captain, you were asking about possible futures?

[Spock's eyebrow slowly raises...

Kirk just fully described what Spock does to him on a regular basis.]

It sounds like an interesting book. I should like to read it when I have the time.

Do you read many books?
spohkh: Say what? (huh?)

I do not see how temperature is related to this conversation Captain.

[Yup, he's an ass.]

I prefer the truth over fairytales. If the book accurately portrays the era, it is a worthwhile read.

( That causes her to smile a little. Oh yes, she knows all about "action". )

My husband is the same way. ( It feels strange being able to say that out-loud. ) He is here as well. You two would probably get along quite well.

Did you experience both lives?

[What? That's not insane where she comes from...]

It wasn't meant as a warning, I assure you. Your demeanor simply reminded me of his.

( In an achy, longing way. Anakin has drifted so far from her, though there is hope in Luceti. He doesn't seem to remember... )

I wouldn't know who falls under the category of Victorian authors to start with.

Anakin Skywalker.

[This topic is much less awkward than the initial impression would suggest, and Robert looks a little more at ease.]

It is... truly f-fascinating how the fiction of some time periods d-depicts... technological advancements made in our time. Sometimes it is... almost laughably incorrect, but... there have b-been many interesting incidents of... nearly a-accurate parallels...

[Not a lot of worlds like Terra, yet. If he only knew. Though he hasn't denied the possibility.]

As for 1984... I b-believe I have come across the title before, but I must confess ignorance as to... the contents. [What does the title mean? It makes the book sound like a history book...]

Yup. They're from about 70 years in the future. It's actually kinda weird. I mean my friend's granddaughter is here.

Well, these programs acted just like people. Looked like them, too.

[Just, you know, with neon spandex. Not how he'd envision programs, but at least they're personable.]

And I don't know. I wasn't exactly heroic back then, plus, I wasn't even the first to get swallowed up. Monstro had this habit of chowing down on everything in his path, even space ships.

I do not require 'rabbit food' at this time Captain, though I appreciate the sentiment.

What is next on your reading list?

I'm pretty sure I have it somewhere.

[An aside to Robert. He's continuing to dodge the question by staying out of the main conversation.]
