A prison indeed, but did he have a choice? His heat was already so far gone, and as bad as it was, he didn't trust himself to be making any rational decisions it was true. Even now those lines kept blurring, made more difficult with the presence of an alpha. An alpha he trusted, and genuinely liked. He hated to think what he might do if he was able to get loose - enticing alphas to go to rut, or triggering other heats. If he was honest he didn't want the entire ship knowing he was Omega, either.
