Not a solid beginning for this trip but- fine. He'd followed the kid through worse things, done more difficult tasks for the sake of spending time with him and keeping him alive. All so they could have mundane, grounded moments like this. He wanted to spend time in Georgia on the porch. Where they knew how far it was to get anywhere and some spiked sweet tea was just a fingertip away.

The promise of making it there eventually was enough to sustain him.
